BANATSKI SOKOLAC, Serbia (Reuters) - A Serbian village unveiled what it said was Europe's number one statue to the previous Jamaican reggae star Bob Marley on Saturday, to promote tolerance in a region motionless recovering from war.

Two Balkan musicians, one from Croatia and one from Serbia, unveiled the monument in the settlement of Banatski Sokolac at midnight during a gathering of rock bands from the Balkans.

"Bob Marley promoted peace and tolerance in his music," said Mirko Miljus, an organizer.

The result continued a trend of raising monuments to popular Western icons instead of local historical figures. Bosnians have erected a monument to Bruce Lee in the town of Mostar and Serbs have place up a statue to Rocky Balboa in northern Serbia.

Following the break-up of the quondam Yugoslavia and the gore of the 1990s, the great unwashed can rarely agree on their role models and prefer figures not linked to the region.

Johnny Rotten makes Duffy cry at awards ceremony

Welsh singer Duffy was reduced to tears after Sex Pistols star Johnny Rotten swore at her when she greeted him.The singer approached the punk backstage at the MOJO Honours List awards ceremony on Monday and tried to hug him.Johnny allegedly brushed her off, saying: "F**k off, you ****. You never do that to me."The Mercy singer was so shocked she burst into tears.A source said: "Duffy could not believe it. It came completely out of the blue."She went to throw an arm around John as they posed up for their group photo. He obviously wasn't expecting it and jumped when she touched him."Then he let loose with his tirade - it was still totally uncalled for. Duffy looked terrified and began to cry."A spokesperson for Duffy said: "Duffy was completely shocked by Johnny's outburst. She just wanted to give him a hug and introduce herself. She was really shaken and upset and went home immediately in tears."The Sex Pistols frontman later claimed he hadn't realised who Duffy was, saying: "Oh, she got an award? I quite like her."

Duffy won Single of the Year for Mercy at the awards bash in London, while the Sex Pistols picked up the Icon prize.Meanwhile, Duffy says she is tired of being compared with other female singers. The 23-year-old Welsh singer - real name Aimee Anne Duffy - has been compared with Dusty Springfield and hailed as the 'new Amy Winehouse' since releasing her breakthrough single Mercy earlier this year, but wants to be recognised in her own right. She said: "To be honest, if it's not Leona Lewis, it's Amy Winehouse. I'm being compared with Lily Allen or Dusty Springfield, bless her soul, she was an amazing woman."I just feel like one day I'll be known as myself, but time will tell."The singer also spoke about how far she had come. She added: "This time last year I was eating fish and chips on a North Wales beach! This is my first big awards ceremony. No one cared about me then so I don't know why they do now."Duffy remained tight-lipped over rumours she is set to record the theme song for the new James Bond movie, Quantum of Solace, teasingly saying: "A lady never exposes her secrets. You've got to leave this Welsh girl alone."- BANG! SHOWBIZ

Earlimart prepares 'Hymn' for summer outing

Indie-rock outfit Earlimart [ tickets ] has lined up a slate of mid-summer dates behind the forthcoming "Hymn and Her" CD, the band's second studio LP in less than a year. The Los Angeles-based act--currently a duo, consisting of vocalist/multi-instrumentalists Aaron Espinoza and Ariana Murray--will kick off the run July 17 in San Diego. The 12-city trek will move from west to east before winding down in early August in Austin, TX. Details are below."Hymn and Her," Earlimart's sixth studio album, is due out July 1 on the band's own Majordomo label, which Espinoza and Murray set up recently in a distribution deal with Shout/Sony."It's cool. We did this deal with Shout, the guys [who] used to run and own Rhino," Espinoza told the LA Weekly earlier this month. "And, I think they still have a passion for music. It's licensing, it's a 50-50 partnership. Basically, we met these guys in a dark alley, and it was like, 'I want to be in a situation where we can put out Earlimart records, and I also want to be in a situation where I can sign artists and bring people to 'the dark side.'"Besides producing Earlimart's albums along with Murray, Espinoza has also guided several up-and-coming bands through the recording process, including Rademacher, which hails from Espinoza's hometown of Fresno, CA.The new set marks a quick turn-around for the normally slow-but-steady outfit, which released "Mentor Tormentor" last year and "Treble & Tremble" two years before that. In announcing the distribution deal with Shout/Sony, the band vowed to "release at least one record every fiscal year for the next 10 years. Or, unless Aaron and Ari decide that they don't want to," according to a press statement.
